Originally built in 1953 at the tip of Shelter Island. in Point Loma, this $ 20- million renovation and addition is located on a spectacular marina site. The Kona Kai offers 206 guest rooms including 32 suites or townhomes, most with views of San Diego bay or the marina. Amenities include two heated pools, two lighted tennis courts. private beach. health club. restaurant, meeting rooms and a I0,000-square-foot ballroom. This first phase renovation and expansion entailed redesigning all of the interior spaces. restaurants, kitchens. health club and ballroom. Standard guestrooms were reconfigured into larger suites and luxurious 2-story town homes. The original hotel was a Polynesian theme and the new owners, being a Mexican hotel company, desired a Mexican motif. To achieve this covered patios, clay tile roofs, stucco, cantara stone, exposed rafter tails and domed towers were designed into the exterior renovation. Master site planning also included a second phase addition of meeting rooms, guestrooms and amenities for this destination resort and conference center.
